Removing the Front Wheel of a Motorcycle

!±8± Removing the Front Wheel of a Motorcycle

For some people doing maintenance on their motorcycle is something they leave to the professionals, they take their bikes into garages and get a mechanic to do the work. This is usually down to not knowing what to do to keep their bike in good shape.

While this is fine for some, you can save a lot of money buy doing the basic tasks yourself.

Take for instance a tire change. The average cost for replacing a tire can be anywhere between £30-£60 each plus the cost of the tire. That is if you take the bike to the garage and get them to take the wheel off, replace tire and reinstall.

Whereas if you take a loose wheel to them that price will drop to around £10-£15.

Taking the wheel off your bike can be daunting at first, there's axles, bearings, spacers, disc brakes etc to get confused about. But when you have done it once you will wonder why you every took it for the garage to do.

In this article I am going to concentrate on the front wheel, as there are differences in how to approach the removal of the rear.

First of all you are going to need:

- A front stand or jack that can lift the front wheel of the ground safely. (Essential)

- A selection of sockets and Allen wrenches (essential, sizes differ by bike model make sure you have them before attempting removal)

- A torque wrench

- A box that you can use to store all associated parts during removal (recommended)

- A rear stand (recommended)

The steps you will need take are as follows:

1. Removes fairings, fenders and any plastics that may be in the way.

Very simple step, most fairings are held in place by Allen bolts, just unscrew and remove anything that me impede the removal of the wheel.

2. Remove brakes.

There are two methods to this depending on if you have disc brakes, or drum brakes.

A. Disc brakes.

Remove caliper by unscrewing caliper mounts from fork legs. Gently pull the caliper away from the disc and secure with a cable tie/string as not to stress the brake hoses, repeat for second caliper.

B. Drum brakes.

Unscrew and remove linkage/cable that connects the brakes to the controls

3. Loosen the axle.

Again there are different ways to do this depending on bike.

A. If your bike has "pinch bolts" you must loosen these first. Then using correct size sockets hold one side of the axle still and loosen the other side. Do not remove yet, just loosen.

B. If your bike doesn't have pinch bolts simply loosen the axle as described above.

4. Lift the bike.

Now you need to lift the bike, weather using a front stand or a jack make sure the bike is safe and stable at all times. Only attempt on level firm ground, and once lifted secure with straps.

I also use a rear stand in this step as it keeps the bike level and more stable.

Lift the bike just until the suspension is fully unloaded you want the wheel to be just touching the floor.

5. Remove axle

YOU ARE NOW READY TO REMOVE THE AXLE, fully unscrew the axle and pinch bolts. The axle may need a slight tap with a rubber mallet to break free from the fork legs.

When it comes out you will have to catch the Speedo mechanism and any spacers that are used on the front wheel. Make sure you know which ones fit were.

The front wheel should now roll out.

You are now free to do maintainance on the front wheel without being charged mechanics fees.

Change tires, brake discs, bearings, whatever you choose.

To install the wheel simply do these steps backwards making sure all bolts are torque to factory settings (user manual for our machine has details)

Tips

- Clean and sand off any corrosion on the wheel spacers before reinstalling, it not only makes you bike look better but it removes the chance of foreign objects entering your bearings.

- Right down descriptions of parts removed and were they go.

- Keep parts in separate sections of a little box.

- If you don't have a box, replace the axle onto the fork legs with the right parts in the right order while the wheel is off.

Clean all parts thoroughly before replacing wheel, grit and dirt are your bearings worst enemy.

Chinese Quads - the Low Down on these Quads

!±8± Chinese Quads - the Low Down on these Quads

Many of our ATV friends have asked this same question over the years that they have indulged in ATV riding - are Chinese quads ok? Can they perform? Is it hard to find Chinese quad parts in the US or on the internet? Can the Chinese quads last? Is it even safe at all to use Chinese quads as opposed to European ones?

We'll admit the fact that we've heard horror stories about Chinese quads failing to work within a week after purchase. We've also heard about unvalidated stories about it being difficult to find Chinese quad parts in this part of the world and if one part conks out on you, you're done for!

But for us, we've been trying out many different ATVs all over the years and surprisingly, we've been lucky, we've never had problems with the Chinese quads that we tried, tested, rented or owned. It's quite funny, actually, because they moment we got on the Chinese quad, we were expecting it to explode!

But it didn't. in fact, let's put it down on record that yes, Chinese quad manufacturers made very little effort in trying to make their quads anything more than just little boys' toys. They fall apart easily and can't perform - that was a long time ago! After years of research and having imported Western talents into their Chinese quad manufacturing companies, Chinese quads are now so much better than it used to be. In fact, it's safe to say that Chinese quads can compare to some of the big brand names in the market today!

Finding Chinese quad parts is absolutely easy these days because ever since China opened up its doors via the internet, many Chinese quad producers and distributors have begun selling and distributing their Chinese quad parts on the internet. To make it all even better, these Chinese quad manufacturers have set up a wide network of distributors all over the world and shipping, replacing and packaging has become much faster than before. We'll just have to give it to the Chinese for that - once the door was opened, there's just no stopping them.

Chinese quad manufacturers have also invested a lot of money into improving their quads and their marketing techniques which might bring the cost of their quads up a little - but with the low cost of labor over there in China , we don't think it's going to bite at all. Compared to the kind of price we have to pay for a locally produced quad, the rise in price is totally negligible!

And the other great thing about Chinese quad is this - we found that there are more options and designs to choose from than others...and we like that! The more options, models and designs you have - the better it is for us ATV fans.

So, if you ask us if Chinese quads are reliable? Of course, they are. But don't just take our word for it; why not take the next step by test-driving a Chinese quad for yourself?

Discount Tire And Wheel Packages For Your Car

!±8± Discount Tire And Wheel Packages For Your Car

Typically, people have a general idea of what they are looking for when they shop for discount tire and wheel packages; however, there are a few things that you should remember when making your selection. Additionally, you may be interested in additional services or tools that can often be added for a discount rate if purchased as part of a package. There are a few things that should be included for free, so it is important to research your options.

Because there are such a variety of tires and wheels on the market, packages prices can vary greatly. Brand name and specialty tires may cost more than alternative and more economical options. The important thing is that the package option offers a substantial savings compared to you purchasing the individual items separately.

When choosing tires for your vehicle, it may be helpful to note the make, model, and year of your vehicle; as well as, the size of tires that are currently on it. This may be useful information to have when you start to choose the width, profile and diameter of tire you want included in your packages.

The brand of tire you choose will also have an effect on your final price; however, in most cases you will still be able to get them at deeply discounted rates. It may be a good idea to ask about a specific brand in the beginning, if you know that is what you want.

Once you have chosen the type of tires you want on your vehicle, it is imperative that you choose from a compatible selection of wheels. Because there are so many colors and designs available, it can often be a difficult choice. Many websites have virtual galleries that can allow you to see what the wheels will look like on a vehicle very similar to that of your own.

It is important that you realize that many discount packages that are purchased online offer free shipping, mounting, and balancing. Most will also include the wheel installation kit, which normally includes lugs, hub rings and valve stems. Additionally, if you are interested in purchasing wheel locks and polishers, or adding road side programs and additional warranties, you may be able to save a little additional money by adding it to a package.

If you already know which tires you may need for your particular make and model of vehicle, this can often be helpful in narrowing down your selection. However, if you are not sure about which ones may be a good choice for your needs, a sales representative will most likely be happy to assist you.

Honda FourTrax 300 Off-Roading

This is me messing around on my 1988 Honda FourTrax 300 at a field near my house. It's got a SuperTrapp IDS2 Race Core exhaust (not just a slip on, includes header pipe) and K&N FilterCharger air filter with a K&N PreCharger and the airbox lid removed. As you can tell, I haven't made the accompanying jetting changes simply because I can't find a jet kit for the carburetor. :PI used to have some nice 25x10-11 ITP Mud Lites on the rear but one of the wheels somehow got bent, so I had to buy a new set. In the process of trying to take the tire off the old wheel and put it on one of the new the bead got torn up, so now I'm stuck with the junky 24x9-11 tires (nearly 2" smaller in diameter—tiny). Anyway, I've had my FourTrax 300 for nearly six years, so it's about time I made a video of it. Update: As of early June, I finally found some jets and am running a 140 main jet (120 stock) and 48 slow jet (42 stock). It has quite a bit more power up high, and I managed just over 50mph with just these tiny tires according to my friend's Lowrance GPS. My previous max speed was over 45mph with my bigger Mud Lites using my friend's Garmin. That's a substantial increase! PS Please pardon my friend for acting goofy at times. :)
